防守始終是快艇隊無法更進一步的問題，但本季頗有改頭換面之勢；上一場鎖死馬刺隊之後，昨天又以一一四比八十二擊敗活塞，和西區排名第一的雷霆戰績同為六勝一敗。
快艇昨天在保羅和葛里芬的裡外連線，上半場一度領先卅分，最後順利大勝。過去幾年，快艇雖然同樣擁有保羅和葛里芬，但連季後賽西區第二輪都沒跨過，主因在於球風華而不實，防守端不夠力，在季後賽往往差之千里。
但目前為止，快艇平均失分僅有八十九點四分，高居聯盟第一；每一百波進攻平均也只丟掉九十一點七分，同樣是聯盟第一，而他們的平均團隊失分距離排名第二的爵士隊，有五分差距，顯示本季確實在防守端下足苦工。
上季快艇平均每場丟掉一○○點二分，本季進步相當明顯，總教練瑞佛斯說：「這是我看過這支球隊防守最好的時刻。」
快艇並非只能擊敗戰績不佳的弱隊，除了開幕首戰面對拓荒者隊丟掉一○六分之外，其餘六戰對手得分都未破百，甚至只讓馬刺拿下九十二分。保羅說：「我們很開心能讓對手達不到平常水準，我認為我們可以維持一整季這樣的表現。」
